A Word in Due Season for Rosh Hashanah 5786
As the sun sets this evening, we stand at a sacred threshold - not merely between days or months, but between divine seasons. The Hebrew Year 5786 begins, marked by the letter Vav (ו), which represents connection between heaven and earth. This is not simply another year on a calendar but the beginning of a seven-year season of reformation that will reshape both individual lives and corporate expressions of faith.
The Shofar's Call
The ancient sound of the shofar pierces the evening air, announcing this divine threshold with its distinctive cry. This ram's horn trumpet serves as heaven's alarm clock, cutting through the noise of our distracted lives with a sound that cannot be ignored. Unlike the gentle chimes that ease us from slumber, the shofar's cry demands attention - jarring, urgent, and unmistakable.
This sacred sound carries multiple dimensions of meaning:
A Call to Awakening - Summoning us from spiritual slumber to heightened vigilance in an hour of increasing darkness and deception
An Invitation to Repentance - Creating space for genuine teshuvah (turning) that prepares us for divine visitation
A Coronation Announcement - Proclaiming God's kingship over all creation and Christ's lordship over His people
A Prophetic Foreshadowing - Pointing toward the ultimate "last trumpet" that will announce Christ's return
A Covenant Reminder - Echoing both Sinai's giving of Torah and Calvary's establishment of the New Covenant
A Sacrificial Remembrance - Recalling both Abraham's faith and God's provision, pointing to Jesus who was the ultimate sacrifice
As this sound reverberates across the earth, it marks not just a calendar transition but a divine invitation to cross over into a new spiritual reality.
The Threshold Moment
Throughout Scripture, threshold moments required specific heart postures. When Israel stood at the edge of the Promised Land, when David prepared to build the temple, when the disciples waited in the upper room - each threshold demanded preparation, surrender, and expectation.
We stand at such a threshold now.
The past season has been one of preparation - stripping away what cannot continue, refining what remains, establishing foundations for what is to come. For many, it has been a wilderness season - isolated, challenging, sometimes bewildering. Yet this preparation, often painful, has been precisely what qualifies you for crossing this threshold.
The Two Sides of the Divine Coin
As we enter this seven-year season, we must understand that judgment and revival are walking hand in hand - two sides of the same divine coin. To one, this will be the brightest and most glorious day; to another, the darkest and most gloomy ever.
Which side of the coin you experience depends not on arbitrary selection but on heart posture. The same divine manifestation that brings deliverance to some brings exposure to others. The same light that illuminates also reveals what has been hidden in darkness.
This is not a time to choose between emphasizing judgment or revival, but to recognize both as expressions of divine holiness. Like Jonathan Edwards preaching "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" during the First Great Awakening, we must understand that genuine revival often begins with renewed awareness of divine holiness and judgment, creating the conviction that leads to transformation.
The Heart Posture for Crossing
How then shall we cross this threshold? What heart posture prepares us to experience the revival side of the coin rather than the judgment?
Humble Surrender - "By humbling themselves before Him," recognizing that human wisdom, strength, and planning cannot navigate what's coming. Only those who acknowledge complete dependence on divine guidance will find safe passage through these waters.
Spirit-Filled Readiness - "Allowing His Spirit to fill them with the oil of His spirit," ensuring our lamps remain lit as darkness increases. This is not a one-time filling but ongoing receptivity to divine infilling that maintains spiritual illumination regardless of external circumstances.
Identity Alignment - "Causing them to manifest as the true children of God," stepping fully into divine sonship/daughtership rather than religious performance. This season requires authentic expression of divine nature, not merely religious activity.
Unified Purpose - "Moving in oneness of heart with the Father unified to fulfilling His will," setting aside personal agendas, denominational divisions, and cultural identities to align completely with divine purpose. This unity isn't organizational but organic - hearts beating in rhythm with the Father's heart.
What Creation Awaits
"Even the world is groaning awaiting our appearing" - creation itself anticipates this manifestation of the true sons and daughters moving in divine authority, His Spirit and power. Romans 8:19 declares that "the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed."
This seven-year season will see increasing contrast between light and darkness, between those manifesting divine nature and those opposing it. As this polarization intensifies, creation itself will respond - both through increasing disturbance (earthquakes, storms, unusual patterns) and through surprising restoration where God's children exercise their authority.
The Ultimate Purpose
All of this - the preparation, the threshold crossing, the seven-year reformation - serves one ultimate purpose: "for the blessing and honor, power and glory of Him who sits on the Throne and to the Lamb, forever and ever."
This is not about human achievement or religious empire-building. It's not about personal comfort or prosperity. It's about the Father receiving what He deserves - a people who accurately represent His nature, who extend His kingdom, who manifest His glory in the earth.
The Invitation
As the shofar sounds tonight, marking this threshold moment, you face a choice: Will you cross over with wholehearted surrender, or will you remain tethered to what is familiar but fading?
Will you embrace both sides of the divine coin - acknowledging judgment while carrying revival, recognizing darkness while manifesting light?
Will you allow the oil of His Spirit to fill you completely, becoming a vessel through whom divine nature flows unhindered?
Will you align with others of like heart, creating not institutional unity but spiritual oneness that manifests the multifaceted wisdom of God?
The shofar has sounded. The threshold stands before you. The seven-year season awaits. The Father extends His hand in invitation.
Will you cross over?
"For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea." - Habakkuk 2:14
